CLACS
The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) is the former home and a continuing strong partner for Latino/a Studies. Research and teaching in Latin American and Caribbean studies at Duke dates back to the 1920's when the University was founded. The present day Center oversees and coordinates graduate and undergraduate education in Latin American and Caribbean studies, and promotes research and dissemination of knowledge about the region. Working in collaboration with UNC-Chapel Hill, the Carolina and Duke Consortium has received major funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and has been designated a Title VI National Resource Center since 1991. Activities and programs of the Carolina and Duke Consortium include faculty exchanges, research and training working groups, film festivals, symposia, library cooperation, a summer Yucatec Maya language program, and workshops for local public school teachers.
CLACS compiles a course list each semester of offerings that relate to Latin America and the Caribbean; the Center also offers its own course listings taught by visiting professors from Latin America and by Duke’s librarians. CLACS offers an undergraduate certificate in Latin American Studies as well as two graduate certificates. The Center funds research at the undergraduate, graduate, and faculty levels.
The conferences, events, and outreach that CLACS supports are often of special interest to those involved with Latino/a Studies. CLACS also collaborates with Latino/a Studies on various projects throughout the year. Visit their site to read more and join their mail list.
